An Independent Intelligent Women in Novel and Reality

Alice Walker is one of the leading figures in African American woman writers. She considers herself a “womanist”, often writing about women who survive from adversity and cruelty. “The Color Purple”, her masterpiece, was awarded Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award.

The novel tells a grow-to-independence story of a poor black girl, Celie. For years, she suffered abuses from her father and husband with no joy or anger. She only narrated her misfortune in letters written to God because her unique accompany sister Nettie was sent away by her husband. She lived like a piece of wood until she met Shug, an old lover of her husband. Both men and women will benefit from this process, learn to view their relationship in a brand-new way and to love the changes happening on themselves or those on people who they used to fear: Sofia learned to make a concession while defending self-esteem; Harpoo learned that husband was one sustaining his family but not one beating his wife to squeeze respect; Albert learned that he would get nothing unless he regretted his abuses; Nettie learned to pity others while pitying herself. So at the end of this novel, readers will feel comfort to see characters who used to go their own way finally sit together, with peace and gratitude, reunite as a brand new, closely-binded family.
